A Home Inspectors Genetic Disposition

This was a hard article to write, not for lack of content but from so much to choose from. Experiences are like that sometimes.

I had this idea in mind to add a mastermind group formation feature to my home inspection membership site. Like most good idea's this one had already bloomed in my minds eye but had its roots baking in the sun.

Getting it all down on paper and hoping that others would see it for the opportunity it is - was not going to be easy. The information gleened from the internet was impressive but I could only take away so much from reading articles and how to's. What I needed was the experience of the group to be able to write passonately about the subject in a first hand tense.

So I set my mind to finding a mastermind group that I could sit in on - you know, sort of observe and take it all in. To that end, I talked to - chatted up - the realtors and clients that I came into contact with about mastermind groups. Did they know of any? Were they ever a part of one? Stuff like that.

Turns out that the realtor community, which is not too unlike our own - as far as how we generate business, has several groups right in my area that meet once a month. Victory goes to the bold - I asked for seat at the table and was invited in by one of the Realtors who was impressed that I knew what a mastermind group was and liked the reasons I wanted to attend.

Now here's where the story takes a bit of a turn, the meetings were on the first and last Wednesdays of the month and it was an open invitation. I knew that I really needed to go to one of these but - to be frank, it was just always in the back of my mind and only bothered me on the first and last Wednesdays of the month or when I'd run into the Realtor that invited me.

Like most ideas or goals for that matter, without an active plan and working the plan- wither and die. As it happens, the Realtor called with a home inspection and asked what I was doing Wednesday afternoon. Taking a look at my schedule - it was tight - but I could shoe horn this in and be done with it. Cross it off for better or worse was the prevailing feeling.

This is where the real struggle was, and the point of the post - convincing myself to keep the appointment! A dozen times or more I fought the urge to call and cancel. Why you ask? That's just it - I kept trying to figure out why I didn't feel like making the effort. Excuses bombarded my brain, but I became intrigued with the - fear. The why of my back peddling. I hate to admit it, but I almost didn't go.

As in so many areas in life, when you get hit - the hits just keep coming. The "talking point" for the meeting that day just happened to be "The Discipline of Success". The group, one by one disclosed what they feared/disliked the most with the daily chores (the system), of generating referrals and the excuses they would give themselves to avoid them.

Someone in the group made the comment  "If it was easy - everyone would be doing it". Facing our fears however small or messed up they may be, is not easy. Success is not easy - It takes action against an ingrained - maybe genetic disposition to be comfortable. I was justly rewarded in my efforts to attend by taking away with me - that which I had come for - the experience of the Mastermind.
