      To: Home Inspectors
From: Robert Gordon Kille
             Arizona ASHI Senior Inspector

In today's competitive market home inspectors have to stand out to be sought out. Becoming a specialist has many advantages. By cutting through with your marketing messages, standing out, and become known as an expert, will have clients calling you for their inspection needs.

Why This Book?

This book is, without a doubt, the single best resource to quickly start inspecting these structures while providing a solid foundation from which you can build your own knowledge base.

You see, I’ve distilled the IRC (International Residential Code) down to the meat and bone, and then I shed light on how certain code violations and other gray areas are handled by an experienced inspector.

It’s true, you can find all this code material in other reference books, but what you get here, in this text, is a first hand inspectors account on how to actually think through an inspection. Your going to learn what to look for and how report on what you’re seeing. And I’m taking you from the beginning; you don’t have to have any experience building a home to get started.

This is a must-have text on how to get started with all the basics covered and more than enough of the advanced concepts covered to give you confidence when discussing defects with your client and/or the site supervisor.

The Inspector's Manual for Phase Inspections provides you with the knowledge to limit your liability by covering contract issues such as plan review. Mainly, why we don’t do it and if we do, what to specifically look for and why.

Here’s What Some Readers Had to Say…

This book is an excellent resource. The specific information we need is so hard to gather. I wish I had this when I first started performing construction inspections. I would strongly recommend this book to all inspectors starting out; you will be heads and shoulders above your competition. I have spent nine years learning the hard way. Even an experienced inspector will gain valuable information from this read.

If you’re even thinking about doing New Construction inspections, you need this book. Bob did a great job explaining and simplifying the basics of the residential code. The best parts are when he shares his mistakes and insights. A home inspection classic, written in a way that’s easy to read.

Take A Free Look Inside:
Learn The Most Common Wall Framing Mistakes!

I always like to see a book before I buy it. Why? Well I suppose it’s because I need to see if the way it’s written is something that I can relate with or process in a way that is understandable and useable. Fill in the boxes below to receive Chapter Three by email.

The four main aspects that you can't get anywhere else.

  1. How I look at the gray areas, becoming a two-minute engineer and giving rational for non-compliance reporting. The stuff that’s not in the IRC code books. This is reason enough to buy the manual.

  2. Insights into the residential code, what to watch for, how to recognize when something’s missing and how to report what you see.

  3. Sharing with you my mistakes, setbacks and blunders.

  4. The other STUFF, the stuff you need to know when handling marketing, scheduling and builders.

Now they say you can’t judge a book by it’s cover, but you certainly can judge the amount you’ll learn from a book by its table of contents.

Why You Should Listen to What I Say…

So why listen to me, a guy that’s been doing this for only four years? That’s a valid enough question and one worth answering.

For starters, it’s all fresh for me – the whole business of getting started. So, in effect, my mistakes will be your stepping stones and my questions and insecurities are shared and answered. Secondly, in those few short years my revenue from New Construction inspections hovers at just under six figures a year.

Have you ever listened to a speaker with a decade or more of new construction inspection experience? Did it seem as if the details of getting started were left out? What you mostly get at these events is an hour and a half of war stories in which your speaker is the hero. Most of the stories that speakers digress into have little to do with the most common defects. Rather, the stories are generally about a one of a kind, interesting situation.

While the slide show and stories can be good and entertaining, they generally make you think that there’s just too much you need to know to get started. Next thing you know, you’re starting to feel inadequate, you start dreaming up all kinds of excuses why you couldn’t possibly get qualified to do this type of inspection.

Get over it. Every single one of us has had those feelings when we have started something new. Just do your homework, about 20 practice inspections, and you will have half the battle of, “I don’t know enough” handled.

This book contains the essence of new construction inspecting as I know it. For the most part, I’ve included my experiences of the past four years in a way that guides you past the rough spots.

I can confidently say that the application of the knowledge in this book will ground you in the basics of new construction inspections and give you what you need to be competent your first time out.

Becoming competent, in the beginning, is just a matter of practice. Ten to twenty field trips and practice reports should be more than enough to provide you the knowledge and skill needed to do a decent first job for your client. Remember, we all have to start somewhere.

Speaking of starting somewhere…

I just finished writing a book review of Robert Ringer’s new book “Action! – Nothing Happens Until Something Moves”. My favorite chapter is the one titled, “The Action Phenomenon”, in which Mr. Ringer uses some of the universal laws to explain how, when you take action, good things follow. He says:

“When you take action – particularly bold action – the atoms in your brain vibrate at enormously high rates of speed, which often results in amazing and otherwise unexplainable ‘coincidences’ happening in life.”

Ringer also touches on the theory of “The Law of Averages” explaining why victory goes to the bold. This book makes for a very interesting read if you are not already familiar with Universal Laws and the Cosmic Catalyst that effect your life whether or not you take action.

My point is…

Be bold! Take this book into the field, do some practice inspections and take that first job when it comes your way, and you’ll never look back.
